Plea for return of stolen Brian Clough Way signs

Forest and Derby fans are pleading for the return of five Brian Clough Way road signs which appear to have been stolen.

Supporters of both clubs have called for the replacements after five signs along the A52 between both cities disappeared.

The road was named after Clough in 2005 to mark his legendary status as a former manager of both football clubs.

It is not clear exactly when each of the five signs went missing but supporters of the two teams spoke out ahead of this Sunday’s derby match between the sides.

Some said they suspect fans seeking souvenirs could be to blame for the thefts.

The sign which was put up at Bardhills Island, Stapleford, is among those missing.

Nottingham Forest Supporters’ Trust interim board member Stephen Wright said the situation is “very disappointing”.

Mr Wright said: “Obviously you can understand why someone might think it’s a nice memento to have in their room when their mates come round and it is all a bit of fun for them.

“However at the same time it is very disappointing that something that is a community recognition to a man that has done great things for the local area on both sides of that road has been taken away for someone to have just for themselves and not the local community.

Brian Clough led Derby County to a First Division title and Forest to two European Cup titles.

“I hope that looking back now whoever has taken it will think this is a loss to the community so let’s get it back there and put the signs back up to show respect for a man that’s done a lot for us.”

Mr Wright’s view was echoed by Kalwinder Dhindsa, a Derby County fan who has been calling for the signs to be put back by whoever took them.

Google Street View images taken in August this year revealed this sign disappeared before the summer. Only three poles, one of which has be bent out of position, remain.

Some of the other signs missing include ones close to Borrowash on the A52

Of the five missing signs, it is believed Erewash Borough Council is responsible for some and Broxtowe Borough Council are meant to take care of the rest.

Notts TV News contacted both councils to ask if they were planning to replace the signs, but is yet to receive a response.
