A Beeston town centre road has re-opened after the bomb disposal team carried out controlled explosions on a suspicious package.

Police were called at around 2.10pm on Friday (August 25) to reports of a suspicious package on High Road in Beeston.

Officers called the Joint Services Explosive Ordinance Disposal Engineers to the scene as a ‘precaution’.

The cordon was covering a large area of the road but it has since been lifted.

The engineers brought a robot to check out a black bag which is reported to have carried out a ‘controlled explosion’.

Lisa Pidgeon was at the scene and Tweeted: “Ooeck, just evacuated from a cafe in Beeston, Nottingham due [sic] a suspect bag outside Durham ox pub!”

Minutes later, she Tweeted an update: “Bomb cordon and public moved further back in Beeston, Nottingham [sic] must be concerned for public safety.”

A full statement from Notts Police said: “Officers were called at around 2.10pm to a report of a suspicious package in High Road, Beeston.

“As a precaution, Nottinghamshire Police has requested the assistance of the Joint Services Explosive Ordinance Disposal Engineers and a cordon has been put in place.

“We would advise members of the public to avoid the area at this time.”
