Police put up a cordon in Hyson Green to investigate the cause of two loud bangs

Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed loud bangs which led to officers closing Hyson Green roads to investigate were caused by a backfiring car.

Police were called at 10.30am this morning (Thursday October 11) after members of the public reported hearing two loud bangs in the area of Birkin Avenue at its junction with Gregory Boulevard.

There were no reports of anyone being injured and no reports of any damage.

Fears a firearm had been discharged have been discounted by the force and, on reviewing a number of CCTV systems and speaking to witnesses, police say it’s clear a car travelling along Gregory Boulevard was having mechanical difficulties and backfiring.

Notts Police say the call was made in good faith and thanked the public for their patience while they carried out their investigations.

Roads in the area which were closed to allow for police searches have now reopened.
