A six-year-old girl from Ilkeston has such a rare condition that when she was born, only twelve other girls were on record in the world as having it, with doctors saying they don’t expect her to reach her twenties.
Alana Daykin has Borjeson-Forssman-Lehman syndrome, a genetic condition that can cause seizures, intellectual disabilities and distinctive facial features. Her family says not much detail is known about the condition, but she has a consultant for almost every organ and is forced to sleep on a ventilator because of sleep apnoea, which is when breathing stops and starts while sleeping.
