Six Barrel Drafthouse

Address : 14-16 Carlton Street, Nottingham, NG1 1NN.

Amidst the array of cocktail salons – where drinks are dispensed from unicorn horns – and the General chavalanche of chains around this part of Hockley, comes the rather nice Six Barrel. Run by the same folk who have the Bunkers Hill, this completes (or starts) a handy circuit of decent bars in this part of town.

As the name suggests, there are six hand pumps at the bar, mixing a range of real ales and craft beers from light to dark, session to heavy. The stock is frequently rotated meaning there should be something slightly different to try on every visit. There’s also a huge bottle menu if you’ve brought your mortgage papers with you.

By day there’s also a big selection of coffees on sale, giving the venue a continental feel, without being too pretentious.

Music? A weekly open mic night and occasional old skool DJs.

Food? Bar snacks at reasonable prices for this end of town. And free mini cheeseboards on Tuesdays. Yes, really!

People? A fair few skinny jeans and hipster beards – but enough passing trade to drown out the overall Mumford and Sons domination.

Opinion? A welcome decent boozer in a part of town where most new operators think cocktails and fusion food are the way forward.
