RAF jets seen flying close to a plane low over Nottinghamshire were spotted by several members of the public on Wednesday.

People contacted Notts TV to say they had seen two jets appearing to escort a larger plane over Ruddington and Radcliffe-on-Trent.

But the MOD says the flight is likely to have been a training exercise involving mid-air re-fuelling.

Radcliffe resident Helen Fitzpatrick was walking through the village at around 3pm when she saw the planes.

“I heard a very loud plane. When I looked up, I could see black shapes very close either side of a passenger plane, it took me a minute to realise they were jets,” she said.

“They were flying towards Bingham, or north, with the jets either side of the larger plane’s wings.”

An MOD spokesman said the ministry was not aware of any air alerts today which would have caused jets to have been scrambled to an incident, and instead the planes will have come from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

“What they likely saw is three military aircraft, the larger one being a Voyager, for refuelling aircraft,” the said.

“It’s likely a routine training exercise.”

RAF Coningsby is home to XI Squadron, a Typhoon jet squadron with multiple roles, including UK air defence.
