Police are trying to piece together what happened in the build-up to a fatal collision on the A46 on Friday.

The incident involved a car and a lorry and happened just after midday on the northbound carriageway.

Investigators closed the road in both directions for nine hours, leading to long delays.

A Notts Police spokesman said: “The A46 was reopened at 9pm the same day following an inspection by officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit.

“Investigating officers would like to thank all those affected by the road closure for their patience. They are also appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident and asks them to call us on 101 quoting incident number 340 of January 15.”

They confirmed one person had died in the collision, but were unable to provide further details.

Following a separate unrelated incident near Coddington, there was also congestion on Froiday around the road’s junction with the A1 after a lorry caught fire earlier in the day (Pictured above).

No-one is thought to have been seriously hurt in this incident.
