Shanay Walker trial: Kay-Ann Morris not guilty of murder

The jury in the Shanay Walker trial at Nottingham Crown Court, has said Kay-Ann Morris is not guilty of murdering her niece.

But 24 year old Morris, who was Shanay’s aunt and legal guardian was found guilty of cruelty towards her.

Seven year old Shanay Walker was found dead in her home in Bestwood Park July 2014.

Morris’ mother 53 year old Juanila Smikle from Top Valley was also found guilty of cruelty towards Shanay.

Smikle was found guilty of cruelty to three other children, but cleared of another charge of cruelty towards a fifth child.

Morris was cleared of a cruelty charge towards another child.

Deliberation

The verdicts were announced at Nottingham Crown Court after two days of deliberation.

A post mortem examination showed that Shanay had received injuries to her head and was covered in bruises.

Morris and Smikle will be sentenced on Friday.
