Stapleford stench stumps locals as the smell gets worse

Video: Notts TV’s Hugh Casswell reporting on the mystery Stapleford smell

Residents of Stapleford have been complaining about a strong unpleasant smell that has shrouded the town.

It has been described by Stapleford Town Councillor Richard MacRae as an “environmentally chemical smell” – but no-one is sure what the cause of it is.

The smell is said to have come and gone in years gone by but has recently got worse over the weekend.

Some people have reported it appears drift in from the north west and the general direction of Trowell.

One resident, Caroline Alfred, said: “It’s a sweet, sickly smell that catches in the back of your throat.

“Other people I have spoken to, as well as myself, have had a headache over the weekend and we are beginning to wonder if this smell is the cause of it.”

It feels like you’re eating it all the time

Another resident, Amanda Plackett, said: “It affects us every day, especially with having to have the windows open, and it gets into your bedding.

“You’re walking through your house and it’s just everywhere.

“You want to have a bit of lunch out in your garden and you can’t because it just feels like you’re eating it all the time.”

The Environment Agency told Notts TV News officers are investigating the cause this week and had already ruled out some industrial premises.
