A statue of Notts County’s legendary management team of Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler has been unveiled outside Meadow Lane.

The £105,000 sculpture was paid for by a supporters’ fund appeal after a six-year campaign.

The famous duo led the club to a number of achievements including promotion to the First Division in 1981 and are widely considered to be the Magpies’ best-ever management team.

The finished statue was created by sculptor Andrew Edwards and was uncovered near the ground’s entrance on Meadow Lane on Thursday in front of hundreds of fans.

Jack Wheeler died in 2009 aged 89, a year after Sirrel’s death at the age of 86.

The pair joined fellow sporting legends Brian Clough, Torvill and Dean and Carl Froch in having a tram named after them in February.

Speaking at that ceremony, Jimmy’s son, David, said: “He was the boss, when he walked in the room. And if you didn’t know who was the boss, you soon did.”

Former Magpies player and  Charlie McParland said: “Jimmy was a legend. A legend off the pitch, a legend as a manager, he had a character in how he dealt with players. He was a one-off there will never be another Jimmy Sirrel.”
