Strategy devised between Nottingham and Derby with devolution deal dwindling

A strategy has been launched between Nottingham and Derby to grow the partnership between the two cities as the prospect of a regional devolution deal fades away.

The ‘Metropolitan Strategy’ is designed to give a better economic future for the two Midlands cities but is not a replacement for devolution.

Deputy leader of the Nottingham City Council Labour councillor Graham Chapman believes the devolution deal is dying because of its complexity.

Things get too complex, too messy

He said: “The ministers say one thing, the civil servants go back and say something else.

“Then you get a change of minister and then there’s a dispute between the treasury and the Department of Environment.

“Then some MPs start piling in; things get too complex, too messy and the deal falls apart.”
