Students returning to Notts to boost local economy

In one months time Nottingham will welcome back more than sixty thousand students and businesses are hoping that it will help to boost the local economy.

It is estimated that across the city, Nottingham is home to around sixty thousand students and it’s estimated that the influx of under and post grads could be worth more than thirty million pounds to the local economy.

Neil Fincham, Operations Director of Nottingham’s business improvement district believes that the importance of students in Nottingham can’t be doubted.

“If you imagine that around every student in the city spent £5000 a year on accommodation, food, shopping and leisure then that would emote to a £30 million injection into the city.”

“It’s undoubtedly significant when you consider the night time economy and the high amount of student activity. It really does show how important they are.”

Many businesses aim themselves directly at students – dropping their prices and giving student discount.

Madoc Bellmay, Business Director of the fast food restaurant Hoffs says that having a large population of students in the city is vital for the company’s long term survival.

He said: “As a new business we do consider that students will add 100 per cent to our business.”
