A teenager has been locked up for three years and eight months for the manslaughter of a 14-year-old boy in Aspley.

Cole Mackin, 18, of Albury Drive, Aspley, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court today (December 19) for sentencing having previously pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Reece Seagrave.

The court heard that Reece died after his airways became blocked after a fight with Mackin where Reece was knocked unconscious.

Paramedics were called to an address in Tenbury Crescent, Aspley, on April 20 to a report that a boy had collapsed and was believed to be suffering from a cardiac arrest.

They moved Reece outside into the garden where they began resuscitation. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre but, despite further treatment, he was pronounced dead.

Mackin told police at interview that he got into a fight with Reece in Tenbury Crescent after Reece had asked to borrow five pounds from him.

CCTV footage showed Mackin grabbing Reece’s legs at the knees, raising him up and then throwing him to the ground, with Mackin landing on top of him.

Mackin said he shouted for help when Reece fell unconscious, before people started coming over to see what was happening. They carried Reece down the street before he was taken inside a house in Tenbury Crescent.

Speaking after Mackin’s sentencing, Detective Inspector Kevin Broadhead, of Notts Police, said: “We welcome this sentence and I’d like to commend the officers who worked on the investigation, working together with the Crown Prosecution Service and the medical profession.

“No sentence will ever bring Reece back but we hope that it will give his family a sense of closure and allow them to get on with their lives.

“Hopefully it will also give Mackin the chance to reflect on his actions and the impact it has had not only on Reece’s family but also his own family and friends.”
