A new Tesco Express branch will open in Nottingham – the eighth store from the chain to open in the city centre.

Nottingham City Council approved a planning application submitted by the food retailer on Monday (January 20).

The new shop will be on the ground floor of student accommodation block IQ Nelson Court on Lower Parliament Street, opposite the Motorpoint Arena  at Bolero Square, on the eastern corner of Nottingham’s Lace Market.

The ground floor commercial unit at IQ Nelson Court was originally permitted for use as a café bar and exhibition space in 2019.

The unit was later built as a food and drink establishment, but not occupied.

Tesco submitted an application in November 2024 for the existing unit to be used as a retail convenience store.

According to a document submitted on January 3, the shop would stay open between 6am and midnight every day of the week. It is unclear exactly when the store will open or how many jobs will be advertised.

The new shop will be Tesco’s eighth Express branch in Nottingham city centre.

There are already seven locations including Upper Parliament Street, Shakespeare Street, Angel Row, Maid Marian Way, Bottle Lane, Station Street and inside Victoria Centre.

Representations about the application can be made in writing to the council up until January 31.

Tesco has been approached for comment.
