Video: Colin Burgess speaking on Sports Week
A former semi-pro footballer whose career was blighted by injury but now plays for a walking football team says ‘there is no substitute for playing’.
Colin Burgess plays for Mansfield Senior Reds who have recently conquered Europe; they became Nottinghamshire champions in their first season and travelled to Spain to win the Monesinos Challenge title.
He also coached at Mansfield Town FC but, speaking on Sports Week, he said it’s not the same as playing.
Colin said: “My injury was plagued by a cruciate ligament injury and eventually I couldn’t play because of that anymore.
“After that, I went into coaching, took my badges and went into that but you miss that edge of actually playing – there’s no substitute for it.
“When I got involved in walking football, it gave me that feeling of the ball again and I really wanted to play and get involved in the game again and it was just great.”
