Tributes have been paid to a young man who died after being found seriously injured outside a shop in St Ann’s.

The man was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre after being found outside the Premier Express shop on Robin Hood Street just after 9.30pm on Wednesday (March 22).

He died as a result of his injuries.

Officers from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit have now taken command of the ongoing murder investigation in St Ann’s.

Police have not yet named the victim or said how he was injured but community leader Marcellus Baz, who runs Nottingham School of Boxing in St Ann’s and who is known as Baz, said he was well known locally and died after being attacked with a knife.

The leader of Nottingham City Council also said he understood the attack involved a knife.

Baz said: “I am absolutely devastated, words cannot explain the pain his family and friends are going through.

“My heart goes out to them, we need to do more to prevent this from happening.”

Notts Police have launched a murder inquiry in St Ann’s. Forensics teams were seen examining the scene.

A post-mortem examination of the victim is currently taking place and his immediate family has been informed.

City Council Leader and councillor for St Ann’s ward, Jon Collins said: “My thoughts and sympathy go out to the family and friends who have lost a loved one in this senseless attack.

“We are working with the police and other partners to help catch the perpetrator and to more widely tackle knife crime, which so sadly ended in tragedy last night.

“When the Government introduced a five-year mandatory sentence for possession of a firearm, it had a big effect on significantly reducing the number of people carrying and using firearms.

“Now is the time for the Government to take the same approach to people carrying and using knives.

“A clear mandatory prison sentence would send a clear message and I am sure would have a similar impact.

“I would urge the local community to remain calm, and if anyone has any information about the incident they should share it with the police to ensure that justice is done.”

Detective Chief Inspector Hayley Williams, who is leading the investigation, appealed for anyone with information to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 825 of March 22 2017, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
