Video: More than 300 re-enactors descend on Newark to bring Civil War history to life

Pikes clashed, muskets fired and cannons boomed over Newark at the weekend as more than 300 civil war warriors re-enacted the battle at Sconce and Devon Park.

The events were part of the third Pikes and Plunder festival, marking the fall of Newark during the Civil War on May 8 1646.

The town, a Royalist stronghold, was cut off by 16,000 Parliamentarian and Scottish troops.

Newark’s capitulation on the orders of the ill-fated King Charles I brought to a close the first phase of the brutal conflict between Crown and Parliament.

The events were brought back to life by the National Civil War Centre and the English Civil War Society.

The highlights were at Queen’s Sconce in Sconce and Devon Park — said to be the best-preserved earthen fort from the period.
