Nottingham’s council housing providers will restore 50 unused properties across the city in the next year for homeless families currently staying in temporary accommodation.

The City Council has given a loan to Nottingham City Homes (NCH), which runs council housing in Nottingham on behalf of the local authority, to save money in the long run.

The move is designed to save NCH up to £700,000 per year by reducing spending on hostels and B&Bs.

Marketing manager of NCH Sam Whitworth said: “These homes are for those who have been roomless for a long time or have been staying in temporary accommodation.

“Things like what school you’re going to go to and not being part of a community are all things we take for granted.

“We all take for granted going home and closing our front door as well, being in our own space and these people haven’t had that for so long.

“Doing it this way is far cheaper and much better for the families involved – it lets them have their own home and get back on their feet.”

Homeless charity Framework is supporting the project.

Communications officer Neil Skinner said: “The journey away from homelessness for people can be fairly long and complex but somewhere along the line, there has to be access to decent quality housing.

“Anything that improves and increases the supply of decent quality housing will always be welcomed.”
