Nottingham Wildcats have won their first major women’s basketball trophy and broke a five-game losing run in major finals.

The team, which plays at Nottingham Wildcats Arena, Bakersfield, beat Scottish team Caledonia Pride 70-66 in a close encounter at Arena Birmingham for the WBBL cup on Sunday.

The cup is the most prestigious knock-out competition in the British women’s game.

It is the side’s first major trophy since the club was founded in the 1970s. The club have won other honours including the last three regular seasons, but have faltered on five occasions in showpiece finals matches.
