Watch: Hundreds of women take part in Nottingham ‘Reclaim the Night’ march

Hundreds of women have taken part in an annual Nottingham protest against street harassment and violence.

Saturday’s event was the fifth Reclaim the Night Nottingham event, a street demonstration against sexual assault, rape, and male violence and harassment against women and girls.

Protesters met at the Forest Recreation Ground on Saturday night (November 18) and marched to the Brian Clough Statue on Old Market Square, carrying placards, blowing whistles and singing songs.

“There have been some huge successes [recently],” said Helen Voce, the chief executive of Nottingham Women’s Centre and one of the organisers.

“I think one of the biggest was us working with the police to get misogyny recognised as a hate crime, so that women can now feel the police will believe them when they go and report sexual harassment or sexual assault, and women have said to us that they feel they can walk taller in the streets.”

Reclaim the Night marches first started in Britain in 1977, when torchlit processions were held in Leeds, York, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, Brighton and London.

The current Nottingham version has run every year since 2013.
