Nottingham’s longest serving tram driver has said he has ‘never seen anything like’ the tram that was derailed in Old Market Square.

Graham Cusick, from Gedling, retired in March earlier this year after 14 years of service and was shocked to hear a tram skid off the tracks on Thursday (May 25).

Witnesses said a tram derailed and skidded off the tracks for 40 metres while trying to switch lines in Nottingham’s Old Market Square.

The tram came to rest at the Market Square tram stop.

He said: “There have been two or three in my time serving as a tram driver but there’s a lot of safety things involved.

Wheel marks could be seen cutting into the concrete near Old Market Square.

“It’s a mechanical thing and things go wrong occasionally like a car and sometimes the mechanics of the tram system break down.

“This one looked as though it came right off the track and usually it just sort of goes a couple of inches before lifting back on.

“I’ve not seen anything like that before.”

A NET spokesman said: “An internal investigation has started and is ongoing, but we wouldn’t want to speculate further until it has been completed.

“However the incident occurred during a low speed turnback manoeuvre, something that is not conducted during normal day-to-day operations when customers are on board.”
