A Hucknall vet has successfully completed a rare operation to remove a Nottinghamshire cat’s brain tumour.
East Midlands Referrals was able to use scanning technology to diagnose tabby cat Tia’s condition, then perform surgery to remove it.
Such operations are rare on cats because in the past so few veterinary centres have had the right technology.
Tia’s owner Josie Evans said: “At first I wondered if she would live, and wonder if something could go wrong, but it didn’t and she’s here, alive and well.”
Graham Oliver, principle vet at East Midlands Referrals, said: “It was a really large tumour in her brain, and the biopsy confirmed it was benign, which doesn’t mean it can’t come back but gives her a much better chance.
“So we’ve opened her skull up, taken a little window out of it, got in, removed the tumour, out the piece of bone back and stitched her soft tissues over.”
He added: “In the last decade or so things have lept forwards in the veterinary sector in terms of the treatments available and the technology used – the MRI and CTR – you can’t diagnose these conditions without these machines.”
