Video: Leigh Curtis spoke to Owen Shipton about how he saved Charlie Slater’s life
Nottingham Post’s Notts County writer Leigh Curtis shared what happened on his ‘strange’ Saturday where he saved BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Charlie Slater’s life.
Charlie, 29, had a pre-match meal ahead of the 3pm kick-off between Notts County and Stevenage on Saturday (February 24).
During the meal, Charlie began to choke on his food and after running into the media room, Leigh Curtis performed the Heimlich manoeuvre and managed to stop Charlie from choking.
Charlie then went on to commentate on the game as normal as the Magpies beat Stevenage 2-0 thanks to goals from Jorge Grant and Shola Ameobi.
Speaking about what happened, Leigh said: “It was a bit of a strange day Saturday.
“Not only did I have to contend with the drama of the football but poor old Charlie Slater from the BBC ate his pre-match meal and started choking.
“He burst back into the press room, he couldn’t breathe and was flailing around – he was devoid of any colour.
“It was quite a scary situation but I managed to get in there and get all the rice and food that was lodged in his throat out!
“The press room floor was not a pretty sight after that.”
