Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has started using specially-made oxygen masks to help dogs and cats rescued from fires.
The service has been given the equipment in three sizes for different pets, so it can help almost any four-legged animal suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
“It’s exactly the same principle for the animals we rescue” said Ashley Fullard, Green Watch manager at West Bridgford Fire Station.
“Obviously after being exposed to a certain amount of smoke the animal may be unconscious, which makes it easier, but often they can tolerate having it put over their nose.”
The masks have been provided by non-profit organisation Smokey Paws and paid fro by donations.
Newark, Highfelds and West Bridgford stations have so far been provided with the kit.
