Watch: Nottingham’s historic Council House under threat because of pigeon poo

Video: Will Hollis reports on pigeon poo putting the council house at risk

The historic architecture of Nottingham Council House on Old Market Square is under threat because of pigeon poo.

A number of pigeons are nesting on the iconic building and their excrement is eroding some of the stonework, according to its site manager.

Nottingham City Council will be adding netting to parts of the building to stop the pigeons from nesting there.

Facilities site manager Theresa Flower said: “We’ve been troubled by the pigeons – the waste is quite acidic and can have a detrimental effect on the stonework.

“Therefore we’d like to put measures in place to eliminate that.

“It’s a grade II listed site, very beautiful and we want to keep it that way.”

Some members of the public raised concerns the netting would make the council house look ugly.

However Ms Flower said this had been taken into account when deciding upon what measures to take.

She said: “The netting won’t change the council house – we’ve got a stone coloured netting that building services have procured with our contractor so it acts as an invisible layer upon the masonry.

“So when you look at the house, the statues; they will still be there and will still be very visible.”
