An independent watchdog has launched an investigation after a man died following his arrest by Notts Police in Carlton on Friday night.

The force says officers were called to reports of a road crash on Southdale Road at around 9pm on Friday (January 6).

Notts Police say the unnamed man died following the incident, but released no further details.

The force referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which says it is investigating and revealed the man died following his arrest.

In a statement, the commission said: “The man was detained by Nottinghamshire Police following reports of a road traffic incident in the area. As he was being transferred to a custody suite, he became unwell and was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre via ambulance, but sadly died.

“IPCC investigators have attended the scene of the incident and the post incident procedures.

“We have not been provided with any evidence that a police pursuit took place.”

“We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the man. We have met with his family, who have asked not to be contacted by the media to allow them to deal with this tragic incident. All other details relating to this incident are subject to the IPCC investigation.”

A Notts Police spokesman said: “Road closures had been in place in the Southdale Road and Carlton Hill areas following the incident. Those roads are expected to reopen shortly.

“Nottinghamshire Police has made a referral to the IPCC following the death of a man, in-line with national policies.

“We appreciate that the extent of the road closures in place following last night’s incident were extensive, so we would like to thank residents for their continued cooperation while our officers work alongside the IPCC to establish the circumstances surrounding last night’s incident.

“The force will continue to cooperate fully with the IPCC in relation to this incident.”
