Forecasters have warned Nottinghamshire will be hit by ‘Storm Barney’ today with people advised to stay indoors if possible to avoid winds of up to 70mph.

The storm will be passing through the county this afternoon. It is only the second storm to be named in the UK, after Storm Abigail last week, due to a Met Office initiative to heighten awareness of dangerous weather.

The south of the county is most at risk with Rempstone, East Leake and Ruddington closest to worst weather.

However the forecast is changing regularly with people advised to check the Met Office website for updates.

The storm is expected to hit the county at around 4pm with a yellow wind and rain warning in place.

Met Office satellite imagery, shown above, shows the heart of the wet and windy weather moving in from the west across the Atlantic Ocean.

Forecasters have also produced an animation, showing its progress towards the UK.

A Met Office spokesperson said:  “Be aware there is potential for it to break branches and when the storm is at its peak it could be dangerous.

“If you have any plans to go out that can be delayed consider delaying them.”
