Woman abused throughout her childhood wants more to be done to help victims in Notts

A woman who was abused for 18 years says she wants more to be done to help victims in Notts.

Maxi-Leigh set up a self-help support group called Support for Survivors which then grew into an award winning charity designed to help those who have been sexually abused as a child.

Maxi-Leigh herself was abused from the age of eight until she was 26.

Speaking about her experiences, she said: “It’s the worst human type of behaviour that a human being could do to a little child.

“That was all I knew.

“I was let down by social services, I was let down by the police, I was let down by NHS services, I was let down by my GP, but people who let me down badly were my foster parents.”

According to Maxi-Leigh, the long-term effects of childhood abuse is something that needs to be looked at in more detail.

She said: “We need to look at homelessness, we need to look at psychosis, there are too many effects to name.

“For every survivor that walks through this door, they suffer with their mental health; it’s a huge issue.”
