Police say a Carlton man stabbed to death in his own home may have been killed by burglars looking for a hoard of cash.

Anthony Fisher, 58, was found dead on Saturday at the semi-detached property on Coningswath Road.

Detectives hunting his killer are trying to piece together his final hours and revealed theft could have been the motive.

People living nearby have said Mr Fisher, known as Tony, was a quiet, polite, man who was well thought of by his neighbours.

Det Supt Rob Griffin, of Notts Police, pictured above, said: “We are focusing on the specific time of 10.30 in the evening to eleven o’clock on Friday.

“We now know there was a burglary that took place at Tony’s house that evening and entry has been forced to the address.

“We know he was a popular man, a local man, he’s lived in this address for 20 years. We’d really like to hear from anybody who saw him on Friday so we can piece together that timeline.

“We are working on the basis that Tony was targeted, not necessarily because he was Tony, but one of the hypotheses we are working on is that those who entered his home believed he had a substantial amount of money in the house.

“Tony was a working man who worked all of his life and the money in his home is believed to be his own personal savings.”

He added officers from across the East Midlands have been brought in to help the investigation and CCTV in the area was being checked.

“We’d like to hear any information from people who can fill in those gaps for us and give us any information whatsoever about what happened to Tony.”

The body of Mr Fisher was found by his son on Saturday afternoon, Det Supt Griffin added.

Police were called and a post mortem examination later confirmed he had been stabbed.
