A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault on Upper Parliament Street on Wednesday morning.
He is the second person to be detained as part of the investigation with another 21-year-old man still in police custody.
The incident happened in the early hours of the morning close to Trinity Walk.
The victim of the assault – another 21-year-old man – remains in a serious condition at the Queens Medical Centre.
