Award for Notts teens behind hard-hitting internet sex exploitation video

Video: The hard hitting film about the dangers of online child exploitation

A group of Notts teenagers have won an award for producing a hard-hitting video highlighting the dangers of online child sexual exploitation.

The group has been commended by the National Crimebeat Association for ‘The Girl and the Box’.

The striking five-minute film tells the story of a glowing cube, representing the internet, which befriends a young girl and tries to control her actions.

A group of teenagers worked with Nottinghamshire County Council’s outreach team to make the video.

After being shown to school children around Notts, it has been praised by the association and the actors involved are being awarded certificates for their work.

Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, Committee Chairman for Community Safety, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This is a powerful, thought-provoking video that highlights the dangers that exist online and it helps remind children and their families to be vigilant when using the internet.

“We hope it can become an important education tool for other children across the county.”

Paddy Tipping, Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Young people must be made aware that they can just as easily become a victim of crime on the internet as walking down the street.

“I’m hopeful that this video will help spread the message to young people across the county.”

Nottinghamshire County Council’s community safety committee helped fund £500, so that the video could be shown around different schools and educate young people.

The video was produced with help from the Real Adventure education team, video producer Ian Dearman with producer Suzanne Rose and youth worker Julie Slater.
