Blue Moon to light up the skies of Nottingham

The rare sight of a blue moon is set to light up the skies, in an event which last occurred three years ago.

The event occurs when there is a second full moon in one calender month, however it doesn’t actually mean that the moon will be blue.

The first full moon appeared on 1st July and the second will appear on Friday 31st July.

It can also be known as a ‘supermoon’, which is when the moon is at its closet point to earth, meaning it will appear to look larger and brighter than usual.

Astronomers predict it will only happen 12 times between now and 2043, the next appearance is expected in January 2018.
