Police has increased presence following recent knife crime events.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a machete after police stepped up knife crime-related patrols in Nottingham.

The teenager was arrested at midday on Tuesday (March 11) in St Ann’s.

Officers say the suspect from police in Huntingdon Street, down to Bangor Way in St Ann’s where he was detained – a machete was then recovered nearby underneath a parked car.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place.

The Notts Police knife crime team has been carrying out extra patrols following a series of crimes in and around the Nottingham city centre.

A 17-year-old stabbed in Primark on February 23rd, a fight involving a machete was reported in Hockley on February 27th and another stabbing the day took place a day later at a house party close to Nottingham Castle. Nottingham residents organised a protest on Saturday (8th March) in response.

Notts Poilce say they have been carrying out uniformed and plain clothes operations across the city centre and neighbourhood areas since the start of March.

Police Constable Daniel Cresswell, of the knife crime team, said: “Every time our specialist team goes on duty the aim is to apprehend suspected knife carriers and take these weapons off the streets.

“Due to recent knife crime-related incidents, and the understandable concern this has caused, we have clocked up many hours of plain clothes patrols to help keep people as safe as possible.

“Knife crime is a policing priority both in Nottinghamshire and nationally so we always seek to charge and remand suspects who have been arrested for possession of a blade.

“Our colleagues will be working hard to achieve this and I hope the public is reassured by our robust response to knife crime in the city.”
