A 17-year-old boy has been charged with starting a fire which caused thousands of pounds in damage to Rushcliffe Arena.

The local teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with arson and has been bailed to appear before Nottingham magistrates on Monday, May 16.

The blaze broke out at the arena in Rugby Road at about 4.30pm on Sunday, September 13 2015.

A 16-year-old boy who was also arrested in relation to the incident has been released without charge.

Building work to renovate the arena was ongoing at the time of the fire, which led to 25 fire fighters attending the scene.

No-one was hurt but work was briefly delayed at the site, although the re-vamped centre is still on track to open in January.

It will house a 25m pool, a beach-themed fun pool, modern gym and fitness studios, bowls rink, sports hall and squash courts and snooker rooms.
