A police cordon was set up in Hockley after a fight involving youths.

Two teenage boys have been arrested as police investigate a brawl in Nottingham where a machete was later recovered.

The incident happened in Lower Parliament Street on Thursday, February 27 at around 11.40am.

Officers have now arrested four people in connection with this incident.

On the day of the incident, a 31-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of affray. They were released on police bail while investigations continue.

Officers then arrested two boys, aged 16 and 14, on Monday (March 3) at two city centre addresses. They remain in police custody.

A search of the 16-year-old boy’s property found a machete, a quantity of cash and Class A drugs.

He has been arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article and being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug.

The 14-year-old boy has been arrested for the same offences.

Detective Chief Inspector Claire Gould, who is leading the investigation, said: “We hope these arrests will provide some reassurance to the local community.

“We completely understand how alarming this would have been for the public to see.

“Anyone who brings weapons into our city centre, whether carrying or using them, can expect a strong police response as it simply won’t be tolerated.

“Detectives have worked extremely hard to build up an intelligence picture of what happened in Lower Parliament Street on Thursday.

“We believe we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

Police have increased patrols across the city centre following last Thursday’s incident, as well as a stabbing at a house party on Friday night and a separate stabbing at Primark five days earlier.

Officers believe there is no link between the incidents, but they have upped visible patrols in Nottingham to ensure the public feel safe on the streets.

In an earlier statement, Assistant Chief Constable Suk Verma said: “We know the recent incidents in the city centre in close proximity to each other will have caused fear, alarm and distress for the local community.

“The last thing we want is for the public to feel Nottingham is an unsafe place to visit. Knife crime continues to reduce across the city and county and we do not want three incidents over a matter of days to deter people from coming to our city.

“These are the actions of a minority, and we couldn’t be clearer with our response. We will not tolerate it. If you carry a knife in Nottingham, we will arrest you.

“Nottingham city centre is very well policed. We have both uniformed and plain-clothed officers that patrol the city daily.

“That’s why we have been able to make a significant number of arrests in relation to all three incidents.

“Every day we are arresting the very people who wish to prevent our city from being a desirable place to shop and visit.”

He added: “The public can expect to see a large, increased police presence in the city centre over the coming days and weeks.

“This is to offer the public the reassurance they want and deserve.”
