Fire tears through block of city centre flats

A large fire broke out on the top floor of a block of flats in Nottingham, sending a plume of smoke across the city.

Fire crews were called to the scene at a building on Raleigh Square, at the corner of Raleigh Street and Gamble Street, Radford, just after 3.30pm on Tuesday (March 21).

Residents were evacuated from the building and people were advised to avoid the area.

Firefighters had the flames out by around 5pm, although the road remained closed.

It is thought no-one was hurt and an investigation is under way into the cause of the blaze.

Video: WARNING – Strong language. Burning debris begins to fall as the fire takes hold.

Ollie Bradbury, 28, said: “Fifteen minutes ago I was working in my top floor which is opposite, when I saw smoke and decided to get out.

“Then I saw the fire engines.

“There is a lot of wood in the building, old rafters, which is a worry.”

Video: Smoke from the fire can be seen from Canning Circus.

Fire crews are used an aerial ladder platform to direct hoses onto the fire from above.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: Firefighters will remain on scene while an investigation into the cause takes place. No-one is thought to have been injured.”
