East Midlands Airport’s main runway was closed after a light plane had a landing gear problem.
The aircraft got into difficulty at about 1pm and was left stranded on the asphalt, meaning no other flights could land or take off while a recovery operation got under way.
A spokesman for the airport told Notts TV the incident is expected to keep the runway out of action while the plane is moved by emergency crews.
While passengers are being asked to check with individual airlines, the spokesman added they should “expect a delay of two hours”
They added: “The airport is closed. The incident involved a private light aircraft that had a landing gear failure after landing.
“There were passengers and pilot on the plane we are hearing no injuries were reported.”
So far two departures have been affected, the 1.25 flight to Guernsey has been cancelled and the Limoges flight has been delayed for two hours and is now set to leave at 3.10.
The Modlin and Guernsey arrivals have been diverted and the Amsterdam and Arrecife Lanzarote flights have experienced slight delays.
