A number of Nottinghamshire MPs were among hundreds kept on lockdown inside parliament after a police officer was stabbed and the alleged attacker shot.

Police say the man was gunned down outside the Palace of Westminster after an officer was attacked with a knife and killed just after 2.30pm.

Moments before a number of people were also hit by a car which mounted the pavement on Westminster Bridge.

The Met Police said at least three other people have died in the incident, which it is treating as a terror attack.

Hundreds of MPs were in the building for one of Parliament’s busiest days of the week as the incident unfolded.

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer, Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry and Gedling MP Vernon Coaker were among local members attending Prime Minister’s questions at the House of Commons as the incident unfolded.

Nottingham North MP Graham Allen tweeted this picture of a car which mounted the pavement outside Parliament during the incident.

Police cordoned off Parliament and no-one was allowed to enter or leave the building as armed officers searched the area.

Sherwood Conservative MP Mark Spencer told Notts TV: “Yes I am in today, we are not entirely sure what happened, we appear to be locked in.

“The police are dealing with the matter outside; we have been told it’s in lockdown and to remain inside.

“This is a unique experience and police are dealing with it.

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer told Notts TV the doors to the chamber inside the House of Commons were locked.

“I am safe and sound inside and we have trained police who are dealing with the matter.

“The Deputy Speaker suspended the house and told us to remain where we are.

“We don’t know more than that at the moment, the police are dealing with it outside and we are waiting to go on with the business of the Commons.”

Broxtowe Conservative MP Anna Soubry also confirmed she is safe and is inside the chamber.

But she tweeted police had ordered her into the lobby at gunpoint in a ‘terrifying’ few moments after the shooting.

Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero is at parliament today for Prime Ministers Questions.

A member of staff from her office said confirmed she was at the palace and the MP also Tweeted that she was safe.

A video posted on Twitter showed a number of people lying on the ground on Westminster Bridge. Witnesses said they had been hit by a car.

Nottingham South MP Chris Leslie is not believed to be in London, and neither is Rushcliffe Conservative MP Ken Clarke.

Labour Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood has tweeted that she is safe.

The Metropolitan Police said the attack in Westminster is being treated “as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise”.

Gedling Labour MP Vernon Coaker was also inside the chamber.

Nottingham North Labour MP Graham Allen was in the House of Commons, as was Labour Mansfield MP Alan Meale. Mr Allen tweeted that he is safe, and Mr Meale told the Mansfield Chad he is also safe.
