Bulwell school growing fruit and vegetables with Eden Project-style bio-dome

A school in Bulwell is encouraging healthy eating by growing food in its own bio-dome.

Crabtree Farm Primary School’s new eco-system will be used to produce fruit, vegetables and flowers.

It’s hoped it will inspire pupils to eat healthily and learn to cook.

The bio-dome is similar to a greenhouse, but self-regulates its temperature and waters the plants with its own pipe system.

It was opened by Cllr Jackie Morris, Sheriff of Nottingham, who said: “I think the most important thing is the sooner we teacher children about eating the right foods and bring citizens up not to eat junk food or processed food.”

Pupils have already had an opportunity to plant their own bulbs.

The concept is similar to the ones used by Cornwall’s famous Eden Project, a series of giant bio-domes preserving plants and wildlife from across the planet.

Headteacher Katie Pritchard says the idea is useful for children in city schools with less open spaces.

She added: “If you are in a school in the countryside then perhaps growing fruit and veg and having orchards would be part and parcel of what they, the families and schools, would do.

“In a city where space is at a premium, it gives us the opportunity to give them the experience that they perhaps wouldn’t otherwise have.”
