Ocean fish and chip shop has won the battle of the batter and been declared the best fish and chip shop in Nottinghamshire.
The chippy on Carlton Hill scooped the prize at the Choice Chip Awards run by the Potato Council in celebration of National Chip Week.
The chip shop first opened in 1920 and is now run by Simon Jacovou.
The 32-year-old is no novice when it comes to the traditional English delicacy as he is the third generation of fish and chip shop owners in his family.
Both his father and grandfather have owned several fish and chip shops around the country and Simon recently took over from his dad at Ocean.
He is very happy with the win and said: “We have been working at it a long time now and I had a good teacher.”
Mr Jacovou would not reveal the recipe to his success and the secret ingredients to his batter, but said that the price was a big factor in keeping his customers happy.
“We have a good loyal customer base and they all voted for us to get us to the top.”
He said that the shop’s fish and chip special is only £3.10 and claims it is the cheapest in the area.
“We try to do fresh food and keep it to that high standard so when people come in they always get fresh fish and fresh chips. That’s why they keep coming back.”
Mr Jacovou said the fish is delivered fresh every day from Grimsby.
