A man has appeared in court after being charged with attempted murder following a stabbing outside a Co-op in Gedling last week.

Simon McHugh, 45, also faces a charge of possession of a bladed article after a man was attacked outside the Westdale Lane East Co-op at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, May 6.

The victim, a man in his early 30s, remains in hospital in a critical condition, according to prosecutor Daniel Wilshaw.

When he appeared in Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 12), McHugh spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

McHugh will appear in Nottingham Crown Court on June 9 due to the severity of the alleged crimes, and he will be remanded until November 10 on the orders of District Judge Katy Rafter. He has yet to enter a plea.

McHugh, of Harrogate Road, Carlton, has further been charged with burglary and theft of a motor vehicle after a car was stolen from an address in Burton Joyce just hours after the Gedling incident.

He is also facing charges linked to incidents in Derbyshire on Monday, May 5.

These charges include false imprisonment, assault by beating, making threats to kill and possession of a knife blade in public.
