Compton Acres shopping centre hit by huge blaze

Compton Acres Shopping Centre has been badly damaged by a huge fire which started in a commercial bin.

The blaze started at around 2.25am on Wednesday morning at the back of Tesco, but it soon spread across the supermarket’s roof and to other businesses.

The nearby Cancer Research Shop also caught fire and smoke damage is thought to have affected some other businesses.

Five fire crews were on the scene dealing with the blaze at its height, and the fire was out by around 8am.

No-one was hurt in the fire and an investigation has already started into the cause.

“Crews were called to the scene at 2.25am and found what was a rapidly developing fire,” said Station Manager Christian Brown, the incident commander.

The Cancer Research Shop has also been damaged.
“However, they have worked immensely hard during the course of the morning to get the fire under control, prevent it from spreading to any other buildings and eventually extinguish it.

“Our fire investigation team will now work to establish the cause of the fire.”

Most of the shops were closed on Wednesday morning as firefighters had put a cordon around most of the site.
