Two Conservative councillors will be challenging the decision to sell the building that is home to Nottingham Central Library today (Wednesday December 7).

The City Council meeting will be held in response to claims there are not adequate provisions in place for the library’s future.

Andrew Rule and Jim Armstrong have asked for the decision over the library to be called in.

Nottingham City Council made the decision to sell the Library’s site on Angel Row to Henry Boot Developments Limited on November 15.

However, there have been concerns there must be plans in place for a new library before the current one is taken away.

I owe my education to free public libraries

A petition asking to keep a central library open has gained almost 1,600 signatures.

It also asks that no library staff will face redundancy, library stocks will not be diminished, a programme of investment and renewal will be put in place.

Fred Riley, who signed the petition, commented: “I owe my education to free public libraries which I’ve used since childhood, and without which I’d be immensely poorer as a person.

“Libraries are essential, especially in the WWW age, as places of learning and community, especially for folk who can’t afford books.”

The meeting will be held at 12pm.
