Notorious roadwords on the Crown Island section of Nottingham’s ring road are nearing completion, the City Council says.

But before traffic restrictions can be lifted, the authority saysresurfacing works due to start on March 5 on Wollaton Road will mean more lane closures.

The works are the latest stage of the £16.2m ring road project to reduce congestion and delays.

The project involves upgrading and redesigning key junctions and widening sections of the road.

Queues have been a regular feature at Crown Island since work started in September 2014.

According to the council,  the junction resurfacing works will be done in phases to reduce the impact on traffic and local residents and businesses.

‘Carefully planned’ traffic management measures will mean traffic flow around the junction can be maintained during the day.

However some delays are expected and some diversions will be in place during the evenings.

There will be a full road closure where Wollaton Road East meets Crown Island between 7pm and 11pm with heavy road restrictions expected throughout the rest of the day.

Diversion routes will be in place using Derby Road and Middleton Boulevard, with Ilkeston Road and Lenton Boulevard for local traffic.

From March 12–18 Wollaton Road West will be closed between 7pm–11pm with diversions in place and off-peak restrictions will also be in place throughout the day.

The diversion route will use Wollaton Drive, Derby Road (A52) and Middleton Boulevard with Wollaton Road and Bramcote Lane for local traffic between Middleton Boulevard and Glaisdale Drive West.

They will be worthwhile when complete

Councillor Nick McDonald, portfolio holder for transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “The Ring Road works are essential for the city.

“It is Nottingham’s busiest route, and improving traffic flow and reducing delays in the long-term will make a big difference to the 50,000 residents, visitors and businesses who use it every day.

“However, while we’re working to make these improvements, it’s likely that delays will occur so please allow longer for your journey and use alternative routes whenever possible.

“We will provide regular updates in the media, through the dedicated web site and social media. I’d like to thank residents, motorists and businesses in advance for their continued patience with the works, which will be very worthwhile when complete.”

Key Ring Road works already completed include:

  • Changing the Aspley Lane roundabout to a new traffic signal controlled junction with new pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities
  • Major reconstruction of Hucknall Road roundabout with new and upgraded pedestrian and cyclists crossing facilities
  • Road widening to three lanes on Western Boulevard between Crown Island and Nuthall Road / Middleton Boulevard
  • New crossings for pedestrians and cyclists and upgrading traffic signalling equipment at the junctions of Nottingham Road / Radford Road and Wilkinson Street / Western Boulevard.
