East Midlands airport celebrates its 50th anniversary

East Midlands Airport celebrates its anniversary this weekend after 50 years of service at Castle Donington.

The airport is known to be the busiest freight airport in the country and served more than 4.5 million passengers last year.

The former RAF base became an airport when the Duke of Edinburgh opened it in July 1965 after a plan was commissioned in 1964.

In 1986 , the airport’s £3 million passenger terminal extension was opened by Princess Margaret.

Airport Managing Director Andy Cliff says that not only is this year their 50th anniversary , but it also marks the completion of their £12 million  terminal redevelopment.

He said: “We would like to take this opportunity to send our sincere thanks to our passengers and staff, both past and present, that have ensured such a successful history for the airport.”
