East Midlands Airport flying high as UK’s busiest freight handler

East Midlands Airport saw its best ever year for cargo in 2014, handling more freight than at any other time in its 49 year history.

In 2014, 308,935 tonnes of flown cargo was handled (the same as 41,191 double-decker buses), over 10,00 more tonnes than the previous year.

The figures were welcomed by the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin when he visited the airport on Monday.

He said: “Today’s record cargo figures are great news for East Midlands Airport.”

“This is further proof of the importance of our regional airports and their key role in our long term economic plan for the nation’s future prosperity.”

The airport is the main UK hub for logistics, mail and delivery firms DHL, UPS & TNT who between them offer regular connections to the USA as numerous points in Europe, Ireland and the UK.

East Midlands Airport is also the UK’s busiest airport for flown mail, and is the UK hub for Royal Mail, handling over two million 1st class items a night.
