Firefighters investigating cause of huge gym blaze

Fire crews have been tackling a blaze in Worksop.

Nottinghamshire fire crews are investigating what caused a huge fire in a Worksop gym.

Crews from Worksop, Retford, Edwinstowe, Warsop and Arnold were called to the incident at on Ryton Street early yesterday morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 4.52am, with two floors of the building alight.

The fire was all but out by mid-morning, but crews stayed on site damping down the flames.

Firefighters will remain in place to ensure the building is safe and an investigation is ongoing.

“We’re now down to three fire engines and the aerial ladder platform at this incident,” said station manager Richard Cooper.

“The building has been severely damaged in the fire and some roads have had to be closed off for public safety – however, we are now working to get these roads opened up again as soon as possible.”

Group manager John Mills, the commander of the incident, praised the work of the crews on-sight.

“This has been quite a complicated incident as the building is in a fairly built-up area, and gaining access to the fire has been quite difficult,” he said.

“However, the firefighters on scene have been absolutely exceptional this morning.

The fire losed Newcastle Street and part of Ryton Street. Both have since re-opened.
