FOREST PREVIEW: Montanier reveals where he wants to strengthen the Reds ahead of Wigan FA Cup trip

Nottingham Forest head coach Philippe Montanier has said that he wants to strengthen the side ahead of their FA Cup third round trip to Wigan.

The Reds take a break from their Sky Bet Championship schedule, where they currently sit 20th in the table, to play in their first FA Cup game of the season against fellow Championship side Wigan, who sit 23rd six points from safety.

Montanier wants confidence to be restored in the side after a run of four league defeats in a row and is aiming for Forest to be among the names in the fourth round draw.

We need to break the bad run

Montanier said: “A good result against Wigan is crucial because when you lose several consecutive games we need victory for confidence.

“We need to break the bad run and this game is very important for us.

“We’ve got no players back from injury, Pinillos needs to play a game with the under 23 side, but David Vaughan is out with a rib injury.”

Earlier this season at the City Ground, the Reds beat Wigan in a seven goal thriller which included a 93rd minute winner.

Britt Assombalonga scored for Forest in the sixth minute and injured himself in the process before Michael Jacobs equalised for the Latics.

Matty Cash hit the post before Oliver Burke restored the lead in the 53rd minute.

Apostolios Vellios had a penalty saved by Adam Bogdan before Will Grigg equalised again for Wigan in the 65th minute.

History then repeated itself as Oliver Burke put the Reds ahead before Forest were pegged back by an 86th minute equaliser from Grigg.

However there was to be no reply to Thomas Lam’s 93rd minute winner.
