Former Paralympian volunteers at care home for dementia patients

Former Paralympian skier, Anna Turney volunteered with a group of youngsters to help decorate a care home for dementia patients.

Youngsters and former Paralympian, Anna Turney who are working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust have been decorating the Landermeads Care Home in Chilwell ahead of the homes annual barbecue.

Anna Turney competed as a downhill skier in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014.

The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust who Anna works with, supports athletes as they transition from sport by using their unique skills to help transform the lives of disadvantaged young people through mentoring programmes.

Anna Turney was keen to get her group of young people involved in some volunteer work to support their local community.

The Landermeads Care Home has created a fruit and vegetable shop and a post office so that residents suffering from dementia can continue to live a normal life in a safe environment, for instance picking up their pension in the post office.

Carers at the home have been working hard to create a comfortable environment for their patients.

There’s even a car in one garden where male residents can get to work under the bonnet.

A lot of people say it’s a hard job, it can be at times but to me it’s my second home and I think it’s got to be in your heart that it’s not just a job, the people that I care for are my family.

The care homes annual barbecue will give the families of the patients the chance to come along and see the finishing touches to the home.
