A Gamston man has been jailed for raping a woman in Nottingham 26 years ago.
Mark Carnelley admitted attacking the woman on Bluecoat Close in the city centre in September 1990 after being caught by advances in DNA evidence techniques.
Carnelley, of Ambleside, who is now 52, was identified when items from the original case were re-tested and a match was found with his DNA profile.
The victim, aged 25 at the time, had been walking along Mansfield Road, away from the city, when she was approached and grabbed by Carnelley.
He pulled her down an alleyway onto the close, where he raped her before fleeing the scene.
Carnelley was given a seven year prison sentence at Nottingham Crown Court and will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
Detective Inspector Justine Darkin of Nottinghamshire Police said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim.
“She was frightened Carnelley would use further violence during the attack and was extremely scared throughout the whole incident.
“She is truly an incredible woman, who has waited almost 27 years for justice to be served, I hope she can take some comfort from the fact that her attacker has finally been caught and is starting a lengthy prison sentence tonight.”
